iWater – Integrated storm water management

The objective of the iWater project is to improve urban planning by developing integrated and multifunctional storm water management in Central Baltic cities. The partners in the project are the City of Riga (lead partner) and City of Jelgava from Latvia, Tartu from Estonia, Söderhamn and Gävle from Sweden and The Union of Baltic Cities, The City of Turku and the City of Helsinki from Finland. The project is financed by the Interreg Central Baltic program, its partners and in Finland the project also gains national state funding. The financing period is 1.12.2015-31.5.2018. The project budget is 2.4 million € of which the budget for the City of Helsinki is 280 000 €.


  • Developing and piloting the Green Factor in the City of Helsinki and partner cities.
  • Development of a storm water adapted Green Factor
  • Development of existing storm water programs in the City of Helsinki and partner cities using an integrated storm water management system (ISWM)
  • Planning of sustainable storm water management solutions in practice in partner cities
  • In addition the project will analyse the cost-benefit of implemented sustainable storm water solutions, compile storm water related planning tools as well as increase and strengthen the capacity of cities to work with storm water issues
